As technology continues to advance, so does humanity’s reliance on artificial intelligence systems such as ChatGPT. While ChatGPT has proven to be a valuable tool for many, its impact on education is starting to raise concerns among parents and educators, as the future generation seems doomed to succumb to the effortless new way of producing work.
One of the major concerns arising from Chat GPT is the effect on student learning and critical thinking. As ChatGPT readily provides answers to complex questions, students are no longer challenged to think for themselves. They are thereby losing the ability to independently solve problems, and are no longer willing to learn and improve through written work of their own volition. This can lead to a lack of creativity and problem-solving skills which are vital in school environments and more broadly very sought after in the professional world.
Another issue with the use of ChatGPT in education is the potential for inaccuracies. This can lead to students being misinformed, especially as Chat GPT runs off information up to 2021, leaving data and statistics to be impeded in reliability. Although at face value this may seem to be entirely negative, this does help to spot pupils who blatantly plagiarise using this new software.
Additionally, ChatGPT’s reliance on large amounts of data (mainly derived from the internet) raises ethical concerns. The data used to train AI systems like ChatGPT often contains biases, which can lead to the maintaining of these unbalanced viewpoints in the answers provided. This can result in students receiving a distorted view of their own work (which may at a later stage be used for revision) and therefore give rise to detrimental beliefs and attitudes.
In conclusion, while ChatGPT may seem like a convenient solution for education, the negative impact of this new artificial intelligence system cannot be understated. It is crucial for educational experts to find a solution to prevent such technologies from entirely replacing written work in the nearby future.
